TOKYO: The Board of Audit of Japan has concluded that central and local governments need to be prepared in incurring expenses up to ¥3 trillion ($26.3 billion) for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020, Japan Times reports.
The figure is nearly double that of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, that had estimated the cost to be ¥1.35 trillion ($11.9 billion) in December 2017. In a survey, the audit body claimed that the central government spent ¥801.1 billion ($71 million) on 286 state projects between 2013 and 2017 that are linked to the games.
The committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government are expected to invest ¥600 billion ($53.1 million), while the central government will contribute ¥150 billion ($13.5 million).
The Tokyo government also owes ¥39.5 billion ($35 million) for the new National Stadium that will be specially designed and constructed for being the main venue of the games. The sources of revenue for maintaining the place after the games have not been zeroed down upon.
