BOLLYWOOD ACTOR AND sports entrepreneur, John Abraham, has expanded his presence in the sporting world by becoming a co-owner of the Rotterdam Dockers, one of the six franchises in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL).
The move strengthens the ownership group of the Netherlands-based franchise ahead of the league’s debut season, scheduled to run from August 26 to September 20, 2026.
John Abraham joins an ownership consortium that already features South African cricket stars Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis, and Heinrich Klaasen, along with Managing Partner Madhukar Shree.
The ETPL is Europe’s first ICC-approved, multi-country franchise T20 league and is jointly backed by the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. The tournament will feature six city-based franchises: Rotterdam Dockers, Amsterdam Flames, Dublin Guardians, Belfast franchise, Glasgow Cosmic, Edinburgh Castle Rockers.
The inaugural edition will comprise 32 matches and aims to accelerate cricket’s growth across Europe’s leading Associate cricket nations.
Announcing his investment, Abraham said he sees enormous long-term potential in European cricket. “Cricket has the power to inspire, unite and create opportunities, and that’s exactly what excites me about the European T20 Premier League. Europe represents one of cricket’s most exciting growth markets, and Rotterdam Dockers has the vision, leadership and ambition to build something truly special.”
ETPL Co-Founder Abhishek Bachchan welcomed Abraham’s entry into the ownership group, highlighting his experience in building successful sports businesses. According to Bachchan, Abraham’s passion for sport and proven track record as a sports entrepreneur make him a valuable addition to the Rotterdam Dockers project.
The ETPL has assembled one of the most high-profile ownership groups seen in an emerging cricket league.
Among the cricket legends associated with various franchises are: Steve Waugh, Rahul Dravid, Matthew Hayden, Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen. The strategy combines celebrated former and current cricketers with business leaders and entertainment personalities to build the league’s global appeal.
John Abraham is no stranger to sports ownership. He has been one of Indian sport’s prominent investors through his long-standing ownership of NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League. His latest move marks an expansion into international cricket and aligns with a broader trend of celebrities investing in sports franchises across multiple disciplines. Unlike passive celebrity endorsements, Abraham is expected to be part of an active ownership group focused on long-term franchise development, branding and grassroots growth.
