SRI LANKA CRICKET (SLC) on Wednesday announced the postponement of the 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), citing preparations for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as the primary reason.
Sri Lanka is set to co-host the global tournament with India in February–March next year, and SLC stated that the decision was made to prioritise venue readiness and ensure world-class facilities for the event.
In its statement, SLC said, “Accordingly, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to shift the 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) to a more suitable window, allowing full focus on ensuring comprehensive venue readiness ahead of the World Cup.”
The board added that the postponement would allow sufficient time to upgrade infrastructure at venues selected to host World Cup matches. Planned improvements include enhanced spectator stands, modernised player facilities such as dressing rooms and training areas, and upgraded international broadcast infrastructure.
The LPL was originally scheduled to commence on 1 December, featuring five franchises competing in a double round-robin league format. New dates for the tournament will be announced in due course.
