KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday participated in a programme at Mohammedan Sporting Club here, and announced a Rs 60 lakh grant to the club for upgrading the gallery and the ground.
Ms Banerjee has also assured all help to Mohammedan Sporting to participate in the Hero Indian Super League, which is the top-tier league of club football in India.
Meanwhile, the TMC observed ‘Khela Hobe Diwas’ across the state with party leaders organising football matches to promote sports.
“I coined the slogan Khela Hobe (the game is on) drawing from a moment of spontaneous inspiration. The slogan came to my mind, just like my party slogan Maa Mati Manush. I love sports and music. That is why I always give this slogan (Khela Hobe),” she said at the Mohammedan Sporting Club programme.
“The TMC government is committed to uplifting sporting institutions. We have given over Rs 7.5 crore to Mohammedan Sporting Club alone. We have made similar contributions to East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and the IFA-affiliated clubs. We have also extended financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to more than 35,000 clubs,” the TMC supremo said.
Earlier in the day, Banerjee in a Facebook post shared a picture of her kicking a football and wished the people.
‘Khela Hobe’ was the battle cry of the TMC during the 2021 Assembly polls. In 2021, Banerjee had announced that August 16 will be observed as ‘Khela Hobe Diwas’.
