LONDON: Premier League giants Manchester United continue to rule the roost when it comes having the maximum number of trademarks by any club and also beats iconic Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona in this regard, according to research conducted by World Trademark Review (WTR).
In the Premier League, United has topped the list for the third consecutive year with 413 trademarks. The club’s aggressive and proactive expansion in the Asian markets has seen them remain ahead of the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal who have 300, 214 and 189 trademarks respectively.
Each Manchester United trademark is worth $4.3 million, according to WTR. The calculation is done by dividing the total number of trademarks from brand value. Chelsea and Tottenham stand at $3.8 million and $3.4 million respectively.
When it comes to non-Premier League clubs, Barcelona tops the list with 365 trademarks while Real Madrid comes in second with 285 of them. However, what was a surprising fact is that despite having nearly the same brand value, each of Barcelona’s trademarks cost much more than that of German champions Bayern Munich.
Bayern has just 87 trademarks, but a brand value of $1.36 billion.
Individually, Lionel Messi has 76 trademarks registered, which is the highest for any footballer in the world. His former teammate and Brazilian star Neymar Jr. comes second with 55 trademarks.
