MS Dhoni first cricketer to earn Rs1.5bn+ from IPL

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has become the first cricketer plying his trade in the Indian Premier League to earn over Rs 1.5 billion in wages alone from the IPL, after he was retained by his franchise. 

Currently on a salary of Rs 150 million, India’s former “Captain Cool”, who has led CSK since the IPL’s inception in 2008, had cumulatively been paid over Rs 1.37 billion as salary by the India Cements-owned team up to the 2020 season of world cricket’s richest annual tournament.

With his contract extension, the India legend crossed the Rs 1.5 billion IPL salary mark amd recorded his name in the history books.

Virat Kohli highest paid 
Not surprisingly, it is Team India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli who earns the highest salary in the IPL – at Rs 170 million. And this has been the case since the 2018 season. But with a sum total of Rs 1.432 billion as salary from the IPL (inclusive of the upcoming 2021 season), he is just behind Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma in total earnings. Sharma, whose per season salary take home is Rs 150 million, will have earned Rs 1.466 billion all told by the end of IPL 14.
