National Sports University to have more branches: Rathore

NEW DELHI: Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore confirmed on Friday during the Lok Sabha’s Question Hour session that the government has begun creating a blueprint for the National Sports University to have more campuses in different states of the country, Press Trust of India reports.

The National Sports University is based in Imphal at present. Rathore also said that four new courses will be introduced there in the short term, namely Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BEPS), B.Sc (Sports Coaching), Master of Arts (Sports Psychology) and Master of Science (Sports Coaching) .

There are two sports courses offered across the 4 schools and 13 departments of the university. Rathore said that the syllabus is prepared to act as a “torch-bearer” for sports education in the country.

“Very soon we will start four more courses in the University,” he was quoted as saying in the Lok Sabha.

“The National Sports University in Imphal will continue to be the mother university. We will also spread campuses of the university in other states as well.”

In response to a question from an opposition party leader about the government’s initiatives in rewarding Indian medal winners in international competitions, Rathore emphasized on the need to end politics dominating sport.

“The need of the hour is to free Indian sports from the clutches of politics”, he added.

The minister also revealed that domestic coaches will be receiving Rs. 200,000 as compensation, doubling their salaries in lieu of overseas coaches charging way more. To recognize their contribution further, he announced that cash incentives from winning performances in international competitions will be distributed more evenly to coaches at the grassroots and intermediate levels apart from the head coaches.
