OLYMPIC MEDALLISTS Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain headline India’s contingent for the Commonwealth Games 2026, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
The Games return to Glasgow for the first time since 2014 but with a significantly streamlined programme.
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will feature just 10 sports, nine fewer than at Birmingham 2022, with competitions spread across four venues within an eight-mile corridor. Athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo make up the schedule for Glasgow 2026.
India won 61 medals at the last Commonwealth Games. Glasgow 2026, however, presents a different challenge with fewer medal events and a significantly smaller sporting programme.
India’s athletics squad will be led by javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion. The team also includes several national record holders and major international medallists like Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur and Murali Sreeshankar among others.
Two-time Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu headlines the Indian weightlifting squad. Bindyarani Devi and Harjinder Kaur, silver medal winners from Birmingham, and bronze medallist Lovepreet Singh also made the cut.
Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain returns to lead India’s boxing squad after narrowly missing out on a podium in Birmingham. Nikhat Zareen is a notable absentee after losing to Sakshi Chaudhary in the national trials.
