Road to LA28 to feature Olympic Q-Series events in four global cities

The International Olympic Committee {IOC} has confirmed four host cities for the Olympic Q-Series in 2028 — Tokyo, Shanghai, Montreal, and Orlando — each staging one stop of the series on the road to the LA28 Olympic Games.

Sports set to feature include 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, climbing, flag football, and skateboarding, with the full programme for each stop to be confirmed later.

The Olympic Q-Series is a collaboration between the IOC and six International Federations, serving as a key part of the LA28 qualification pathway and offering athletes a direct route to secure quota places shortly before the Games.

The four-stop series will feature two back-to-back events in Asia in May, followed by two in North America in June. Tokyo opens the series from May 4-7, with Shanghai following a week later from May 11-14. The series then moves to Montreal’s 1976 Olympic Park from June 1-4, before concluding in Orlando from June 8-11.

The Q-Series will feature six sports: 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, climbing, flag football, and skateboarding. BMX freestyle, climbing, and skateboarding return from the inaugural 2024 edition, while 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, and flag football are new additions. The specific sports for each stop will be confirmed at a later date.

The 2028 Q-Series builds on the inaugural 2024 edition, which was held in Shanghai and Budapest and drew strong spectator attendance and global broadcast engagement. The expanded format brings six sports together across four cities, making the qualification pathway more visible and accessible for fans and athletes. Further details on ticketing, broadcasting, and the sports programme for each stop will be confirmed at a later date.
