MUMBAI: Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag will no longer be mentoring IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), spending the last three seasons in the role. Sehwag took to Twitter to make the announcement on Saturday.
“All good things must come to an end and I’ve had a wonderful time at Kings 11 (sic) Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 (sic) comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead,” tweeted Sehwag.
The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ played in the 2014 and 2015 seasons for KXIP, before becoming its mentor from 2016-2018. He was said to being instrumental in roping in Yuvraj Singh and Chris Gayle and naming Ravichandran Ashwin as the captain of the team following the mega auction last season.
However, with ex-New Zealand coach Mike Hesson replacing Australian Brad Hodge as head coach from the 2019 season, Sehwag’s days seemed numbered even as the head of Cricket Strategy and Operations of the franchise.
