Bangladesh Test team captain Shakib Al Hasan has finally cancelled the endorsement contract he had signed with controversial portal Betwinner News.
Shakib’s climbdown came after the Bangladesh Cricket Board served the star all-rounder an ultimatum that he would be dropped from the national team if he didn’t end his association with the betting news website. The BCB made clear in no uncertain terms that it has a zero-tolerance policy on gambling or betting.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon confirmed the development. Papon said, “I have heard that Shakib has canceled the contract verbally. However, he must give us in writing that he has canceled his contract with Betwinner News. The management will then proceed with the rest of the process.”
The Asia Cup team announcement has also been delayed due to the Shakib controversy. Shakib, who was given the Test captaincy last month, was expected to return to T20 leadership with the Asia Cup.
