Smith to donate Canadian T20 earnings to grassroots cricket

SYDNEY: Former Australian captain Steve Smith will be donating his entire playing fees from the upcoming Global T20 Canada league to the development of grassroots cricket in Canada and Australia, cricket.com.au reports.

Smith was named one of the marquee players of the new T20 competition despite being banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia due to the ball-tampering incident in South Africa in March.

The board has no objections for the player to feature in domestic tournaments outside Australia. As a part of his sanction from Cricket Australia, he has begun working with a male mental health charity to complete his 100 hours of community service.

When it comes to the league in Canada, Smith’s deal with the tournament organisers will involve promoting cricket across the country courtesy several community cricket initiatives such as conducting training camps.
