Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced the renewal of its exclusive broadcast and digital rights for the Durand Cup for the next three seasons, through to 2027.
The 134th edition of Durand Cup kicks off in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Organised by the Indian Army Eastern Command on behalf of the three services, the Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in Asia, dating back to 1888. It continues to provide a prestigious platform for the country’s top clubs and emerging talent. With its rich heritage and competitive spirit, the tournament remains a marquee event in the Indian football calendar.
It bears noting though, that the pre-season action will begin against the backdrop of a stalemate between the All India Football Federation and its commercial partner Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) over the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA), which governs the operations of the top-tier Indian Super League.
The MRA expires on December 8, and with no breakthrough yet, the very future of ISL remains in limbo ahead of its scheduled September start.
The competition continues to draw a full roster of 24 teams despite only six ISL clubs confirming participation this year. The ISL sides taking part are East Bengal, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mohammedan SC, NorthEast United FC (defending champions), Jamshedpur FC and Punjab FC.
Three teams from the I-League –– Diamond Harbour FC, Shillong Lajong and Namdhari FC –– will also be a part of the Durand Cup 2025.
The Indonesian Army football team, as too the the Nepal Army team, have also joined the tournament roster.
Coming back to the renewed agreement, it grants SPNI exclusive television and digital rights, with matches to be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network channels and live-streamed on Sony LIV across India and the subcontinent.
Having served as the broadcast partner for the past two editions, SPNI has contributed to significant growth in the tournament’s viewership. The Durand Cup recorded a 100% increase in cumulative reach and a 27% rise in average impressions compared to the 2023 season.
As part of this long-standing partnership, SPNI has also rolled out specially curated campaigns featuring former Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, Indian Super League team owner and actor John Abraham, and Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan.
SPNI chief revenue officer – distribution and international business and head – sports business Rajesh Kaul said, “At Sony Sports Network, our commitment to delivering the best in Indian football remains unwavering. Renewing the exclusive broadcast rights for the Durand Cup for three more seasons reinforces our dedication to elevating the tournament’s legacy and bringing top-quality football action to fans across India and South Asia. This partnership has led to a 100% growth in cumulative reach which reinforces our position as the home of Indian football, offering viewers not just live action but an immersive experience across television and digital platforms.”
Durand Cup organising committee vice chairman and GOC Bengal Sub Area Major General Rajesh Arun Moghe commented, “The Durand Cup is proud to continue its journey as a tournament that blends rich legacy with bold ambition. Our re-association with the Hon’ble President of India has added immense prestige to the event, reaffirming its national importance. With this year’s edition being played across five states, the tournament has significantly expanded its footprint, bringing top-tier football closer to fans and communities across the country. Renewing our partnership with Sony Sports Network for three more seasons ensures that the tournament reaches every corner of India and South Asia through world-class coverage. This collaboration not only enhances visibility but also strengthens our shared vision of making Indian football more aspirational. The Durand Cup continues to provide a vital platform for the aspiring youth of India to test their mettle against the best in the business, shaping the future of Indian football with every match played.”
