Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) (Culver Max Entertainment Private Limited) has secured the exclusive media rights for all Asian Cricket Council tournaments from 2024 to 2031.
Star India was the incumbent ACC media rights holder.
The comprehensive deal covers all editions of the Men’s and Women’s Asia Cups, Men’s and Women’s Under-19 Asia Cups, and the Men’s and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cups. The global media rights package includes linear television, digital, and audio rights.
The landmark deal marks “more than a 70% increase from the previous media rights cycle”, a joint press release declared. While there was no mention of what said 70% increase quantified, media reports have put the figure at $170 million (Rs 1,434 crore). It bears noting that the ACC had set the base price for the global media rights package at $170m. Translated, this effectively means that Sony was the sole bidder for the rights.
Per the release, “This significant partnership with SPNI not only secures high-quality coverage for the ACC’s flagship tournaments, but also provides the financial resources necessary to drive development programs across all member nations.”
On winning the ACC media rights, SPNI MD & CEO Gaurav Banerjee commented: “…We are delighted to bring these action-packed tournaments, which will also include India and Pakistan matches (emphasis ours), to our viewers for the next 8 years. ACC tournaments have created unforgettable moments and set the stage for the most intense Asian Cricket rivalries. We eagerly look forward to sharing the thrill and spirit of these matches with cricket fans.”
Banerjee’s comment is a clear indicator (if any were needed) that the agreed value in the rights cycle is precluded on India-Pakistan matches taking place in ALL editions of the Men’s Asia Cups in particular.
ACC president Jay Shah said: “…With Sony Pictures Networks India as our new media partner, we are confident in their ability to deliver world-class coverage and an immersive viewing experience for fans worldwide.
“With Sony’s extensive expertise in the broadcasting industry, we are excited to embark on this new partnership. Sony’s expertise and innovative approach promise to bring a fresh perspective to the coverage of Asian cricket, reaching new audiences and setting new benchmarks.
“The substantial increase in rights value will enable the ACC to channel significant resources into grassroots programs, infrastructure development, and talent pathways, especially for associate nations. This collaboration will drive the continued growth of cricket across Asia and ensure its
vibrant future.”
