COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), which has come under pressure from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in recent times over corruption allegations in the country and within the administration, conducted its fresh round of elections on Thursday.
The event was scheduled originally for May 2018 but was delayed on many occasions due to internal wrangling and the interference of the Attorney General to restore law and order in the process.
Shammi Silva has replaced Thilanga Sumithapala as the SLC President, as the latter backed the former’s candidature which gave Silva 83 out of 142 votes.
In a surprise, 1996 World Cup winning captain and politician Arjuna Ranatunga was pipped by Ravin Wickremaratne for the post of vice-president.
Ranatunga, 55, contested one of two vice-president posts but only came third in voting.
His brother, Nishantha, who was nominated as secretary, was also defeated.
Ranatunga ally Jayantha Dharmadasa also failed in his bid to become Sri Lanka Cricket president, losing out to Shammi Silva — a loyalist of former SLC chief Thilanga Sumathipala, Ranatunga’s arch-rival.
The secretary, assistant secretary and treasurer were re-elected as well.
