MUMBAI: In the IPL player retention event for 2018 season here Thursday, Royal Challengers Bangalore made Virat Kohli their unanimous choice for yet another season by paying the maximum amount in the league’s history.
Kohli’s Rs 170 million surpasses the Rs 160 million Yuvraj Singh picked up with the Delhi Daredevils in 2015.
Records were also set by Australian Test skipper Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner, each of whom were retained for the 2018 IPL season for Rs 120 million by Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. These are the most lucrative T20 contracts ever offered to an Australian.
Ben Stokes’ Rs 145 million season with Rising Pune Supergiant last year remains the record for a foreign player.
This year’s auction — January 27-28 in Bengaluru — will be the biggest the competition has seen, with each team given a bumper salary cap of Rs 800 million and tasked with rebuilding their squads from close to scratch.
