MUMBAI: Suresh Raina and Ravidra Jadeja were the two players retained by Chennai Super Kings along with star player M S Dhoni, as the team marked its return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) fold at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) player retention event here on Thursday evening.
Rajasthan Royals, who also make a comeback in IPL 2018 after a two year suspension, have retained just Steve Smith, and have announced Ranjit Barthakur as the franchise’s new CEO. Barthakur is the chairman and director of Jaipur IPL Cricket Private Limited, the Rajasthan Royals franchise.
Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore have exercised their right to retain a maximum of three players. According to the IPL player retention rules, each team is allowed to retain five players; a maximum of three through player retention (pre player auction) and by opting for right to match (RTM) (during the player auction).
Delhi Daredevils have retained three players – Chris Morris, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Kings XI Punjab have retained just one player – Axar Patel, while Mumbai Indians retained three – Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
Kolkata Knight Riders retained two players – Sunil Narine and Andre Russel.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have retained two – David Warner and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, while Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained three – Virat Kohli, A B de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan.
Ricky Ponting, who was earlier coaching the Mumbai Indians, will now be the head coach of the Delhi Daredevils team. The new Kings XI Punjab coach is Brad Hodge.
RCB chairman Amrit Thomas said in a statement, “For the 11th season of IPL, we are pleased to retain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan. Virat has been a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore since the inception of the league, and is the team’s captain – on and off the field. The camaraderie and team work between Virat and AB de Villiers has been the backbone of the team for several seasons and we want to build on that. Sarfaraz is one of the players we believe will rise to great heights, not just in the IPL but in world cricket. We believe that together, Virat, AB de Villers and Sarfaraz embody the ‘play bold andfearless’ outlook that is inherent in RCB, and we are excited to retain them for IPL 2018”.
