SAN FRANCISCO: Basketball star Stephen Curry is in talks with the PGA Tour for a deal that would allow his management company to sell marketing and sponsorship deals for a golf event in the fall of 2019, ESPN reports.
The Safeway Open in California is said to be targeted as the event that Curry would host.
A PGA Tour official confirmed that they were in talks with Curry regarding this deal.
“There’s no doubt Stephen Curry brings a young, new, diverse audience to the PGA Tour through his passion for this great game and support for the community,” PGA Tour spokeswoman Laura Neal told ESPN.
“We’re excited about the prospect of partnering with an iconic athlete of his caliber in the future.”
Curry’s passion for playing golf has made him interested in making such a move. However, he isn’t expected to play in the competition although he did play two rounds for a Web.com Tour event in August 2017.
This isn’t the first instance of a non-golfing celebrity hosting a PGA Tour event. He would join the likes of entertainers such as Justin Timberlake and Bing Crosby in doing so, should the deal materialize. All the proceeds raised from the competition will be donated to Curry’s charity, the Curry Family Foundation.
