PUNE: In a development that was always on the cards, the 2021 edition of the Tata Maharashtra Open and Bangalore Open Challenger men’s tennis events – scheduled to be held in early February – have reportedly been postponed indefinitely (read cancelled).
“We have informed the ATP that we wish to do the event at a later date in 2021,” Prashant Sutar, Tournament director of the ATP 250 Series event hosted by Pune, told Times of India.
“A feasible date right now would be sometime in September-November,” he added.
Sunil Yajaman, Tournament director for the $162,000 Challenger in Bengaluru, told the daily, “We have requested the ATP for a date in the second half (of 2021).”
Public comments notwithstanding, SportzPower sees the chances of the two tournaments going ahead in 2021 as next to nonexistent. More so in the case of Maharashtra Open, which many tennis players regularly enter as a tune up event for the year ahead.
