The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that The Oval in London will host the 2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, with the showpiece match scheduled to be played from June 9 to 13. The announcement marks the fourth consecutive edition of the WTC Final to be staged in England, reinforcing the country’s position as the premier destination for Test cricket’s marquee event.
The five-day final will determine the winner of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, bringing together the top two teams in the standings after nearly two years of competition. A reserve day will be available, if required, to make up for any lost playing time due to weather interruptions, in line with ICC regulations.
The Oval will become the third English venue to host the WTC Final after the inaugural 2021 final at the Ageas Bowl (now Utilita Bowl) in Southampton and the 2023 and 2025 finals at Lord’s. The decision continues the ICC’s preference for England as the host nation, citing its strong cricketing infrastructure, favourable June playing window, established broadcast capabilities and consistently high spectator demand.
The Oval, home of Surrey County Cricket Club, is one of the world’s most historic cricket venues and has hosted numerous ICC events, including matches at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy. The ground is also renowned for staging the final Test of England’s home summer and has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years to enhance spectator experience and hospitality facilities.
ICC Chair Jay Shah said the governing body was delighted to award hosting rights to The Oval, highlighting the venue’s rich cricketing history and reputation for staging major international matches. He added that the World Test Championship has elevated the relevance of bilateral Test cricket and continues to generate strong interest among players and fans worldwide.
The World Test Championship was introduced by the ICC in 2019 to provide greater context and competitiveness to Test cricket. The inaugural title was won by New Zealand, who defeated India in Southampton in 2021. Australia claimed the 2023 championship after defeating India at Lord’s, while South Africa lifted the 2025 title by overcoming Australia in another memorable final at the Home of Cricket.
The announcement also provides certainty for broadcasters, sponsors, travel operators and hospitality partners, allowing them to begin long-term planning for one of cricket’s most prestigious events. England has consistently delivered strong attendance figures and commercial returns for ICC tournaments, making it an attractive destination for global cricket events.
The 2027 final will conclude the third full World Test Championship cycle under the revised points system, with leading Test-playing nations including India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the West Indies competing for a place in the decider over the next two years.
