Vivo’s IPL title rights deal to stay unless govt directs: Dhumal

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has no intention to review the title partner rights that Chinese smartphone brand Vivo holds for the Indian Premier League (IPL), BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said on Friday.

But the BCCI will not hesitate to terminate the contract in the event the government directs the Indian cricket board to do so, Dhumal told Indian Express.

The “clarification” follows the flare-up on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at Galwan valley that saw 20 Indian Armymen lose their lives fighting against Chinese troops, which has led to calls for a boycott of Chinese goods and services.

The BCCI gets Rs 4.4 billion annually from Vivo as title rights fees and the contract runs till 2022.

“There’s no two ways about it, in case the government decides to ban Chinese products and companies, we (BCCI) will be happy to follow that,” Dhumal said. He also said the BCCI would “keep public sentiment in mind” in the future when the contract cycle ends.

The BCCI treasurer, whose brother Anurag Thakur is Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs in the BJP government, also made clear that: “As an Indian, I’m all for it to teach them (China) a lesson and hit them at places where it hurts them very badly. Be it economic or not buying their products…”
