KOLKATA: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday sanctioned Rs 200,000 each to 4,300 clubs across the state and also announced financial aid of Rs 100,000 each for 221 sports coaching centres, IANS reports.
“Our government is providing a yearly aid of Rs 200,000 to 4,300 clubs across Bengal. Also, these clubs would be eligible to get financial assistance of Rs 100,000 every year for the next three years if they submit their annual audit report,” Banerjee said at a sports felicitation event at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in the city.
“We will also provide financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to 221 sports coaching centres across the state so that they can develop infrastructure and provide better training to the sportsmen of tomorrow,” she added.
Banerjee also revealed that the budgetary allocation for the Youth and Sports Department, which was Rs 730 million earlier, has increased sevenfold upto Rs 5.15 billion since her government came to power in 2011.
In September 2018, the CM had spelled out plans to roll out a sports policy so as to provide benefits to promising young talent when she had announced a cash prize of Rs. 1 million and a government job for Swapna Burman, India’s first-ever Asian Games Gold medal winner in heptathlon.
