Year’s wait at an end as world, India readies for Tokyo 2020

MUMBAI: A year’s wait is finally coming to an end as Japan gets ready to host the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

The upcoming Olympics are scheduled to be held in the Japanese capital from July 23 to August 8.

A total of around 11,000 athletes from 206 countries are expected to participate in 33 sports in Tokyo Olympics 2021.

India will send a 228-strong contingent comprising 119 athletes to the Tokyo Olympics, and this will be India’s largest-ever group of sportspersons at the Olympics.

The sailing team was the first from India to reach Tokyo on Tuesday. The sailors had arrived at the Japanese capital directly from their training bases in different countries across Europe. The boxing and shooting teams will also arrive at Tokyo from Italy and Croatia, respectively. Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will reach Tokyo on July 15 or 16 from the United States. 

Olympics 2020 will see the introduction of new competitions including 3×3 basketball, freestyle BMX, and Madison cycling, as well as further mixed events. These Games will see karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts, as well as the return of baseball and softball for the first time since 2008.

Live telecast in India
Sony Sports Network has won the rights for live broadcast of Tokyo Olympics in India. Sony TEN 1 HD/SD, Sony TEN 2 HD/SD will live broadcast the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics with English Commentary while Hindi Commentary will be available on Sony TEN 3 HD/SD.

Being a sporting event of national importance, Doordarshan will live telecast the Tokyo Olympics 2021 on its terrestrial network and Direct-to-Home platform.

Start time for Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony for Tokyo 2020 will start from 8 pm local time or 4:30 pm Indian Standard Time.

Start time of sporting events
