RCPL, Murali partner for Spinner sports drink rollout: Report

Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL), a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries conglomerate, has teamed up with former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan to co-create, manufacture and sell sports drinks in India under the Spinner brand name.

It bears noting that RCPL has an existing packaging partnership for Campa for cans with Muralitharan’s company Ceylon Beverage International, that was signed in May 2023. Spinner Sports Drinks are being bottled at the Muthiah Beverages’ (the Indian subsidiary of Ceylon Beverage International) plant in Mysore.

Per Economic Times, Spinner is to be priced at Rs 10 for 150 ml bottles, about half the price of sports drinks brands like Gatorade and Powerade sold by PepsiCo and Coca-Cola respectively.

For the record, it had been reported in May 2023 that Ceylon Beverage’s energy brand Spinner and its juices would be retailed by RCPL in India as part of the deal.

Ceylon Beverage, established in 2020, operates a Sri Lankan plant with a capacity to produce 300 million cans annually, fulfilling Campa’s canning needs for RCPL.

Muralitharan, a former cricket star and the world’s highest wicket-taker, also has family ties to the processed foods industry through Luckyland Biscuit Manufacturers in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

The Campa portfolio currently includes Campa Cola, Campa Lemon, and Campa Orange in the arkling beverage category.
