NEW DELHI: The capital’s Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium is all set to be renamed as the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.
The development comes days after former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was also the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the president of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), passed away on Saturday.
The process of renaming the stadium will take place on September 12, at a function where a stand at the Kotla will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.
DDCA confirmed the news Tuesday via its official twitter handle: “News Alert: Kotla to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The renaming of Delhi’s famous cricket venue as Arun Jaitley Stadium will take place on September 12 at a function where a Stand of the ground will be named after India captain Virat Kohli.”
The DDCA, however, clarified that while the stadium has been named after Jaitley, the ground will still be called as Feroz Shah Kotla.
DDCA tweeted: “A clarification from the DDCA president: The stadium has been named as Arun Jaitley Stadium. The ground will continue to be called the Feroz Shah Kotla.”
Commenting on the development, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said: “It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”
During his tenure as the DDCA president, Jaitley is credited to have transformed the Kotla stadium by renovating it with modern facilities.
