Financially-hit FC Pune City to field Academy side in Super Cup

MUMBAI: Poor on and on the field performances seem to have taken a toll on the future of Hero Indian Super League (ISL) team FC Pune City, which has opted to release its entire 2018 squad due to financial constraints, Goal.com reports.

It is believed that Indian and international players’ payments couldn’t be paid since the last two months. The situation has got so desperate that the club is seeking an investor to help resurrect the club. One of the most prominent actors in Hindi cinema, Arjun Kapoor is one of the co-owners of the club, alongside the real estate group, Wadhawan. The latter has reportedly been in a financial crunch, so much so that it sold 70% of its stake in its popular subsidiary, the DHFL Group which will be bought by Aadhar Housing Finance.

The club also nearly contemplating backing out of the knockout stages of the Hero Super Cup. However, instead it has opted to send its Academy team to the tournament, perhaps in order to save face. FC Pune City have been one of the laggards of the ISL and it finished seventh out of 10 teams in the points table this season despite having star players such as Iain Hume, Ashique Kuruniyan and Marcelinho.
