DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in its series of board meetings that ended on Saturday that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will be once again become one of its Full Member nations following the appointment of Shammi Silva as President.
The governing body had threatened to suspend SLC and downgraded its status to a mere observer rather than a full-fledged participant in its board meetings last year, as the national federation nearly suffered from government intervention.
However, with fresh elections conducted recently, Silva’s appointment was a shot in the arm for Sri Lankan cricket, which has been accused of corruption amongst players and administrators alike in recent years.
To reward SLC’s compliance, the ICC not only permitted Silva and his contingent to participate in Saturday’s meeting, but also granted $11.5 million to the board that was withheld since July 2018.
