CHANDIGARH: Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh confirmed in an official statement on Sunday that as many as 82 sportspersons from the state, most of whom have won laurels for India in the past, will be awarded with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award. It is the highest sporting honour of the state.
Each of them will stand to receive Rs. 200,000 each from the government, making it a total of Rs. 16.4 million as prize money.
Punjab’s new sports policy is upping the ante for more initiatives, which include a full marathon to celebrate the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev on 31 March as well as the setting up of a full-fledged sports university in the state.
