NEW YORK: NBA commissioner Adam Silver surprised many at the recent All-Star Technology Summit in Charlotte by unveiling ‘smart jerseys’ of the future.
It involves fans having the ability to use the NBA app on their smartphones to change the number and name of the player on the back of a jersey which they purchase. For instance, Silver showed that a jersey featuring Stephen Curry’s name with the number 30 could be changed to a Michael Jordan having number 23.
The idea behind the move is to customise fan engagement in the future amongst the ‘Gen Z’, the millennials who were born from 1997-2010, which is 2.5 billion-strong at present globally.
