NEW DELHI: The felicitations and (hopefully) financial rewards have begun to kick in for Hima Das, the new poster girl of Indian athletics. Assam’s 18-year-old track sensation created history by winning the Gold medal in the women’s 400 metre event at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, on Thursday.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced a state-level felicitation and a cash reward (amount not specified) for Das, IANS reports.
Das became the first ever Indian to win a Gold medal at a world level track event in the 400-metre final at the IAAF World Under 20 championships in Finland.
Sonowal congratulated her on her stupendous performance, while also confirming that she will be appointed as the state’s brand ambassador for sports.
“In order to inspire the budding players of the state to aim big and the young generation to take up sports seriously, Hima will also be made the state’s brand ambassador for sports,” Sonowal stated.
