Washout on Day 1 of inaugural Test costs Ireland $89,700

LONDON: Ireland’s opening day in Test cricket against Pakistan turned out to be a major dampener, with rain calling off the entire day’s play on Friday and no coin toss held at all.

According to a report in UK’s The Guardian, no play ensured that Cricket Ireland suffered losses of $89,700 as they needed to refund 5100 tickets bought by spectators to celebrate the occasion.

CEO of Cricket Ireland, Waren Deutrom was optimistic that the disaster on Day 1 will not impact the Test match negatively in terms of the interest of people. However, he did call Test cricket a “loss leader” for the board.

“Yes, of course it’s disappointing. But what I don’t want to do is go around with a long face, projecting misery. Because it isn’t that. We’re still hugely proud and there are still four days to go,” Deutrom said to The Guardian.

However, the weather for the remaining 4 days of the game is forecasted to be much brighter and sunny.
