MUMBAI: A special committee formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India will prepare a draft document listing suggestions to take women’s cricket in the country ahead.
One of the suggestions mooted at a meeting of the special committee on Wednesday was to start a Twenty20 tournament in the under-23 category. The players have also asked for an improvement in their pay structure. Currently, the BCCI has awarded central contracts to 11 women players.
The committee, formed after the Indian women’s cricket team’s stellar performance in the Women’s World Cup last month, is expected to offer suggestions meant to give an impetus to domestic tournaments by creating opportunities in the under-16, under-19, under-23 and in the senior categories.
Among those who attended the meeting on Wednesday were Ratnakar Shetty, general manager, Game Development, BCCI and in-charge of women’s cricket, Diana Edulji, CoA member, Rahul Johri (CEO, BCCI), and players Harmanpreet Kaur, Jhulan Goswami and Hemlata Kala.
The committee also received suggestions from former India player and freelance journalist Snehal Pradhan and Sidhanta Patnaik (Wisdenindia.com) who covered the women’s World Cup, as also from Indian team captain Mithali Raj and coach Tushar Arothe.
