The total income for the Board of Control for Cricket in India from the Indian Premier League saw a significant 78% year-on-year growth in 2023 to reach Rs 11,769 crore ($1.4 billion).
This was primarily driven by new media rights deals, according to board’s annual report. While income from media rights stood at Rs 8,744cr ($1.044bn) – a 131% increase from the previous year, the Women’s Premier League generated a surplus of Rs 377cr ($45 million) for BCCI.
Meanwhile, IPL generated an additional revenue of Rs 5,120cr ($611m) in 2023, marking a 116% increase over that in 2022.
The board’s total expenditure on IPL also surged 66% to Rs 6,648 crore ($793.7m) in the same period.
It is to be noted that Tata Group’s IPL title sponsorship is adding Rs 500cr annually to BCCI’s coffers (Rs 2,500cr over five years until 2028). On the media rights side, Disney Star has committed Rs 23,575cr for five-year IPL TV rights till 2027, while JioCinema will pay the BCCI Rs 23,758cr for the digital rights over the same period.
Overall, BCCI’s income surged 50% to reach Rs 6,558cr ($783m) and expenditure increased 70% to Rs 2,831cr ($338m).
