DP WORLD INDIA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP is set to return next year, with plans to establish itself as a regular fixture on the DP World Tour calendar. This season, the DP World Tour featured 42 tournaments across 26 countries.
The inaugural edition in Delhi last month saw World No. 2 Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, who went on to win the tournament, headline the field. McIlroy said he was deeply moved by the warmth of India’s hospitality and his memorable encounter with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at a vibrant Diwali celebration.
The four-time Major champion, after whom the ‘Rory McIlroy Award’ has recently been instituted recognising the best-performing DP World Tour member across the four Majors, spoke highly of his experience in India.
“I enjoyed it, I had a great time in India. I don’t know if I have one lasting memory. I guess I’ll remember not hitting the driver for four days. But the hospitality, the welcome, the generosity of the people there, it was absolutely amazing,” he said.
DP World group deputy CEO and chief financial officer Yuvraj Narayan expressed delight at the event’s success, which drew crowds to the Delhi Golf Club. With a USD 4 million purse, it was the richest golf tournament ever held in India. “New events such as the recent DP World India Championship show how we are supporting the game’s growth and accessibility for the long term,” he said.
