Financial worries stall ISL go ahead for several clubs: report

AT LEAST six Indian Super League (ISL) clubs are yet to formally confirm their participation for the upcoming season and are waiting for further clarity from the sports ministry and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) before taking a final call, Times of India reports.

Several clubs have expressed reservations, informing the sports ministry that their involvement is contingent on the assurances discussed during the recent joint meeting, as well as concrete steps from the federation to ease financial pressures. This comes despite the ministry announcing that the league is scheduled to begin in February.

Sources indicate that Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, Kerala Blasters, FC Goa and Mumbai City have sent conditional communications regarding their participation. Odisha FC has also not confirmed its position and is expected to write to the AIFF on Thursday, with its decision linked to concerns around costs and relegation.

Clubs have said that their willingness to even consider taking part this season stems largely from a request made by the sports minister, who attended the meeting on Tuesday. However, they have underlined the need for government support on infrastructure-related issues.

One of the key demands raised collectively by the clubs is the waiver of the Rs 1 crore franchise fee for the season, particularly as they are already contributing directly to the league’s operational expenses.

In addition, clubs have sought assistance in facilitating player salary reductions, arguing that such measures are necessary to keep the overall cost structure viable.
