Fawad Sarwar set to acquire CPL’s Jamaican franchise: report

US-BASED BUSINESSMAN Fawad Sarwar is set to become the new owner of the Jamaican franchise in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), according to a report by the Jamaica Observer.

Pakistan-born Sarwar currently heads the FKS Group and Kingsmen Sports and Enterprise, which owns the Hyderabad franchise in the Pakistan Super League as well as the Chicago Kingsmen in Minor League Cricket in the United States.

The CPL did not disclose the identity of the new owner when it confirmed the T20 tournament’s return to Jamaica in a statement on Monday. However, reports suggest that Sarwar’s takeover is expected to be formally announced in the coming weeks.

Sarwar’s group is said to have outbid several interested parties for the Jamaican franchise, which has been inactive since 2023 after former owner Kris Persaud shifted focus to launch the Falcons franchise in Antigua. According to ESPNcricinfo, the GMR Group, co-owners of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, had been in advanced discussions, but the talks eventually collapsed.

The tournament, scheduled to run from August to September, will also mark the return of matches to Sabina Park for the first time since 2019. The Jamaica Tallawahs previously won the CPL title in 2013, 2016 and 2022.
