NEW DELHI: Indian Premier League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has indicated that the 2024 edition of the IPL will kick-start from March-end in India and fixtures will be announced after the dates of the upcoming general elections are confirmed by the Union government.
“We will work with the Indian government, and agencies to make sure that the league takes place in India. We are waiting for the schedule of the general election to be announced and then we will plan accordingly… like which state will host what game at the time of election will be planned that way,” Dhumal was quoted by IANS as saying.
He further added, “It (IPL) will most likely start from March-end… and general elections are in April, so we will work it out with the help of the government.”
Last month Cricbuzz reported that the upcoming IPL is likely to start from March 22 and will be played till May 26. It added that the confirmed schedule will be out once the the general election dates are confirmed. World cricket’s richest by far annual tournament will be slotted between the Women’s Premier League and the T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and the US.
With ten teams vying for the coveted trophy, and a total of 74 matches to be played, India’s general elections could potentially force the IPL Governing Council to spread the tournament across two phases.
Also, the organisers will have to keep the scheduling of the T20 World Cup 2024 in mind. If the final of IPL 2024 is held on May 26, then India would have only eight days of preparation ahead of the event.
