MTV Channel wins Lanka territory b’cast rights for ICC World Cup

COLOMBO: Disney Star, global broadcast rights holder for the ICC Mens Cricket World Cup 2023 to be held in India in October and November, has sublicensed the Sri Lanka territory rights to MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd.

Sunil Kanojia, Group director and CEO of the Capital Maharaja Group said: “We understand the importance of sports and especially cricket in Sri Lanka and we would not consider to have done our duty if we did not bring the World Cup to the people of Sri Lanka.”

Chevaan Daniel, Capital Maharaja Group director, added: “We are here today for something special. Cricket is like a religion in Sri Lanka. MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd has associated itself with cricket for decades with commitment. So we are pleased to announce today that we have secured the rights to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023”

The 13th edition of the World Cup features ten teams – Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka opens its campaign on October 7 versus South Africa in Delhi.

Susara Dinal, CEO of MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd, noted: “We have been broadcasting a large amount of global sport, including cricket and rugby. Cricket World Cup 2023 will be broadcast Live on TV1 and streamed Live on www.sirasatv.lk. The tournament begins on 5th October with 48 matches, with the final on November 19.”

The tournament will open on 5th October at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad when defending champions England meet runners-up New Zealand. The first round will be a round-robin with each team playing the other nine, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. The final will be at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
