MUMBAI: This is interesting. It looks like Disney Star has taken a strategic call to let go media rights to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the calendar year. The rights have been picked up by Sony Pictures Networks India. Without any fanfare it needs mentioning.
Wrapping up the Grand Slam season, US Open 2022 will be played at Flushing Meadows in New York City between Monday, 29 August and Sunday, 11 September.
While there has been no official announcement as yet, promos advertising the upcoming Grand Slam have begun appearing on SPN’s streaming platform SonyLIV.
Even as official confirmation of the development is awaited, what this means is that of the four tennis Grand Slams, three – US Open, Australian Open and French Open (Roland Garros) – are now on the Sony Sports Network. The media rights for Wimbledon remain with long-running India host broadcaster Star Sports till at least the 2023 edition.
