MUMBAI: In a boost to the Maharashtra government’s ambitious sports project ‘Mission Shakti’, the state’s Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar confirmed on Thursday that Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has agreed to support the initiative.

As part of the agreement, Khan will be visiting the Tadoba Park in Chandrapur for a related programme soon, one of the districts where the government is in the process of building sports complexes of international standards which are set to be ready for use by December this year, IANS reports.

He is also likely to visit the special sports enclave in Ballarpur, which is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‘Mission Shakti’ will target sports like weight-lifting, archery, shooting, swimming, athletics, volleyball and gymnastics, with excellence in physical endurance, fitness, superior stamina and other features included in a rigorous selection test.

The aim of the initiative is to produce athletes and sportspersons from the regions of eastern Maharashtra who can win medals for the country keeping the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games in mind. The government will also be approaching the corporate world for financial assistance in this regard.
