Ahmedabad gearing up for ‘grand show’: CW Sport prez

AHMEDABAD IS GEARING UP to host a “grand show” for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, according to Commonwealth Sport president Dr. Donald Rukare, who has expressed strong confidence in the city’s preparedness, following an extensive inspection visit across Gujarat.
A high-level Commonwealth Sport delegation comprising President Rukare, CEO Katie Sadleir, and Games Director Darren Hall conducted a multi-day review of infrastructure, venues, and planning between April 8 and April 10. The visit marks the first official assessment since Ahmedabad was awarded hosting rights for the centenary edition of the Games.
Rukare conveyed optimism about Gujarat’s readiness, stating that Ahmedabad is well-positioned to deliver a world-class sporting spectacle. The delegation praised the state’s hospitality and the pace of development, highlighting that the groundwork for a successful Games is already visible.
The visit included detailed presentations by local authorities on infrastructure projects, smart city initiatives, and international-standard sports facilities being developed across the Ahmedabad-
The delegation inspected several key venues and project sites, including:
  • Narendra Modi Stadium (main ceremonies venue)
  • EKA Arena and other indoor facilities
  • Veer Savarkar Sports Complex
  • Sabarmati Riverfront development
  • Statue of Unity (planned event location)
These inspections are aimed at ensuring that all venues meet global standards required for hosting a multi-sport event of this scale. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel assured full government support, emphasizing that the state is committed to delivering world-class infrastructure within timelines. Officials highlighted that preparations are not just focused on sports venues but also on urban mobility and transport upgrades, tourism infrastructure, smart city expansion, athlete facilities and operational planning.
The Games are seen as a stepping stone for India’s larger ambitions, including a potential bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, with large-scale infrastructure already underway. The current visit is part of a series of ongoing reviews that will guide the next phase of planning and execution. Officials indicated that early alignment with international standards will be crucial in ensuring seamless delivery.
