CW Sport team in Gujarat; review of 2030 Games preparation

A HIGH-LEVEL DELEGATION from Commonwealth Sport has begun a four-day visit to Gujarat (April 8–11) to review preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted in Ahmedabad. The visit marks the first formal on-ground assessment since the city was confirmed as host of the centenary edition of the Games.

The delegation began its visit with a meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar and discussions focused on progress of infrastructure projects, long-term vision and delivery timelines, and ensuring a sustainable and globally competitive Games. Additionally, Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare extended an invitation to the Chief Minister for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, reflecting ongoing international collaboration.

The delegation’s visit is aimed at evaluating Gujarat’s readiness across multiple dimensions:

  • Inspection of key sports infrastructure and venues
  • Review of planning, operations, and execution frameworks
  • Alignment with international standards and best practices
  • Strengthening collaboration between global and local stakeholders

During the four-day tour, the delegation is scheduled to visit several flagship venues, including:

  • Narendra Modi Stadium (proposed for ceremonies and cricket)
  • Veer Savarkar Sports Complex (multi-sport facility)
  • EKA Arena (indoor events venue)
  • Other proposed and under-development sites across Ahmedabad

The review will assess construction progress, athlete experience and facilities, and operational readiness and logistics. This visit is the first official inspection since Ahmedabad was officially awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games in November 2025. The 2030 edition marks 100 years of the Commonwealth Games and 74 nations and territories are expected to participate.

Authorities view the Games as a driver for sports infrastructure expansion, urban mobility upgrades (metro, roads, connectivity), growth in tourism and global visibility, and community and grassroots sports development.
