Badminton league in Nagaland from May 29

KOHIMA: The first Nagaland Premier Badminton League 2019 under the aegis of Nagaland Badminton Club (NBC) in association with Nagaland Badminton Association will start from May 29 at Indoor Badminton Stadium, Kohima.

Six teams—Raging Phoenix from Kohima, Panama Shuttlers from Mon, Shuttle Rockers from Dimapur, All Beats Kohima, Kohima Smashers and Beits Badminton Club Kohima—will vie for the coveted title, which will conclude on May 31. Rs. 2:30 lakh has been set as total prize money for this league.

The champions will fetch a cash prize of Rs. 1.50 lakh while the runners up will be awarded with Rs. 80,000. There will also be individual awards for Player of the League and Most Promising Player.

NBC president, Er John Metha told the press conference that the league system for badminton in the state has been introduced to promote the sport here.

The categories for this league will be U-15 for boys single, U-17 girls single, U-19 boys doubles, mens singles, mens doubles, mixed doubles (men-40+ and open for women) and men’s 85+ doubles.

The league will be played on best of seven matches format. Whoever wins four out of seven matches will be declared as winner. A team with the highest points will qualify for the semifinals cum knock out round for each group.

Matches will be played in best of three games of 21 points each without extension in the league round robin matches and best of three games of 21 points from the knock-out stage to the Finals.

The match will be conducted under the rules and guidelines of the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Association of India.
