LALIGA has announced that the Matchday 17 fixture between Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona will be held on 20 December at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida (USA) marking a first for the competition.
The move follows years of dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders and comes at the direct request of the participating clubs, with LaLiga’s full support. The initiative aims to accelerate international growth, expand the global fanbase, and reinforce LaLiga’s standing as one of the world’s premier football leagues, all while maintaining the integrity of the competition. It also offers LaLiga’s millions of US-based fans the rare opportunity to experience an official fixture live, while keeping the league’s roots firmly anchored in Spain.
The match underscores the rapid rise of football’s popularity in the US, arriving at a pivotal moment ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
To support Villarreal CF’s home supporters, compensation measures have been introduced. Fans will be offered free travel to Miami to attend the match. Those who choose not to make the trip will receive a 30% discount on their season tickets, a gesture acknowledging their loyalty and support. Leading up to the event, a range of fan engagement experiences will take place across the US.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas said, “This match is a historic step that takes LaLiga and Spanish football to an all-new level. We understand and respect the concerns this decision may raise, but it is important to put it in context: this is one game out of the 380 that make up the season. LaLiga represents millions of fans around the world, including many who follow their teams passionately and deserve the chance to experience seeing them live at least once. This match is about bringing our football closer to that global fanbase without diminishing our commitment to those who enjoy it week in, week out in stadiums across Spain.”
