BCCI accepts Rahul Johri’s resignation from CEO post

MUMBAI: The BCCI has officially parted ways with its chief executive officer Rahul Johri, whose long-pending resignation was accepted on Thursday.

A senior official in the know of things told PTI that they have decided to accept his resignation letter sent on December 27.

“Rahul Johri’s resignation has been a accepted. He was earlier given an extension till April 30 but this time it has been accepted,” the BCCI veteran told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Johri, who joined the BCCI in 2016, had earlier put in his papers after the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had made way for the Sourav Ganguly-led set-up to the run the world’s richest cricket board (and have given a sorry account for themselves thus far (media rah-rahs notwithstanding).

That Johri will likely not cry buckets over the acceptance of his resignation (other than the financial implications of course), is clear considering how he was increasingly marginalized with his domain of work, including matters related to ICC, being handled by Jay Shah, BCCI secretary and son of home minister Amit Shah.

And as is the casual approach of the BCCI in media related matters, a serious allegation was thrown by an unnamed board official against Johri.

A BCCI official told IANS: “He has been informed of the decision by email. He had resigned earlier and was asked to continue in the interim. However, the leak of confidential financial information of a bid that was being prepared accelerated the decision. Highest levels of confidentiality are expected when any bid takes place in an organisation.

“This was considered to be scandalous and had the potential to compromise the bid. Financial matters, if you cannot keep confidential, then it is a serious lapse that cannot be excused, especially with the new BCCI.”

The irony of said unnamed official throwing around such serious allegations was of course lost on the man.

Johri was appointed to the role in April 2016, having previously served as executive vice-president and general manager for South Asia at Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific.
