Bundesliga app launches AI “Captain” feature as smart companion for fans

THE BUNDESLIGA has launched an AI assistant called ‘Captain’ in its official app, developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The feature gives fans access to live statistics, historical match data, tactical analyses, trivia, and video highlights through a chat interface in German and English.

Fans can ask questions about specific players, clubs, and matches; for example, requesting a personalised video playlist of a player’s goals. Captain also includes a “Coach Mode” with a daily football quiz and leaderboard with country rankings, adapting to individual knowledge levels.

The assistant is built on three content pillars: editorial content from the Bundesliga app, over 200 million data points processed per match, and video content dating back to the 2017/18 season. During live matches, Captain continuously analyses key moments and provides personalised information in real time.

Captain will also cover FIFA World Cup 2026 match data and past World Cup tournaments. AWS has been the Official Technology Provider of the Bundesliga since 2020.
