Goa cabinet clears GCA plan for cricket stadium

PANAJI: The Goa state cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal for leasing land admeasuring 189,000 sq ms at Dhargal to Goa Cricket Association for the construction of an international standard cricket stadium.

The cricket stadium will be of 50,000 crowd capacity and it will be constructed by GCA.

The land was originally acquired by the government to build a sports city in Dhargal, Navhind Times reports.

The land for construction of the international cricket stadium at Dhargal would be leased out to GCA for Rs 190 million, which would have to be paid in two installments to the state government, the daily quotes Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar as having said.

Parrikar further stated: “GCA has already paid over Rs 8.5 crore (Rs 85 million) as the guarantee amount towards the lease of land to the government and it has to pay another Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) before taking possession of land.

“The second installment of 50% shall be paid before commissioning of the stadium for 10 years from the date of signing of lease deed by GCA, whichever is earlier.”

The cabinet note also stated that in case of default or violation of any terms and conditions by the GCA, the plot and its appurtenances shall be reverted back to the government of Goa.

The government has initially decided to lease out the land for 33 years, extendable for two terms of 33 years each, Navhind Times further reports.

Parrikar further said that GCA should pay 5 per cent of revenue earned out of commercial activities at the ground like rental/auction of shops, food court, parking lots etc. to the Goa government.

The daily quotes state Sports Minister Manohar ‘Babu’ Ajgaonkar as stating that GCA has informed that it will need three years time to construct the international cricket stadium at Dhargal.
