Durand Cup back on football calendar, to be held in Kolkata

NEW DELHI: The 130th edition of the Durand Cup, the world’s third oldest and Asia’s oldest football tournament, organized annually by the Indian Armed Forces, will be held between 5th September and 03 October after a year’s gap caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

A statement from the Armed Forces said the Durand Cup will be held at various venues in and around Kolkata.

Among the 16 clubs expected to compete in the 130th running of the Durand Cup are four teams from the defence services. The top Indian Super League and I-League teams have also been invited, confirmed entries among which are ATK Mohun Bagan FC, SC East Bengal, Gokulam Kerala, and ATK reserves.

The winning team is presented with three trophies – The Presiden’s Cup (first presented by Dr Rajendra Prasad), the Durand Cup (the original challenge prize, which is a rolling trophy) and the Shimla Trophy (first presented by citizens of Shimla in 1903 and since 1965, a rolling trophy).

The Durand Cup’s most successful teams are SC East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, with 16 titles each.
