Govt sanctions Rs1.71bn for disability sports centre in Gwalior

NEW DELHI: The Indian government on Thursday approved the construction of a national ‘Centre for Disability Sports’ in the Madhya Pradesh city of Gwalior at an estimated budget of Rs 1.71 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.

Its aim is to ensure effective participation of persons with disabilities in sports activities and also enable them to compete at national and international levels. Besides this, it is also believed that social acceptance of disabled persons will be greater due to the self-sufficiency this project will give them.

The government has appointed a governing body of not more than 12 members to supervise the centre with some serving in ex-offido capacity and others coming in as experts from NSFs apart from experts in para games.
