IGPL heads meet Sports Minister, discuss ‘growing potential of golf’

INDIAN GOLF PREMIER LEAGUE co-founder and ambassador Yuvraj Singh, along with IGPL CEO Uttam Mundy, met Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya at his office to “discuss the growing potential of golf in India”.

Per an IGPL release, the minister commended the league’s efforts to promote the sport nationwide.

Set to make its debut in January 2026, the franchise-based golf league will feature six teams competing in a city-based format. Organised in association with the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), and the PGA of India, the event will bring together professional and amateur golfers, both men and women, in a team-based competition.

The discussion centred on the expansion of golf in India and how the IGPL initiative aligns with ‘Khelo Bharat Neeti’, the government’s comprehensive framework to strengthen the sports ecosystem at all levels.

During the meeting, Dr Mandaviya emphasised the importance of grassroots sports development, highlighting how franchise-based tournaments such as the IGPL can play a key role in nurturing emerging talent. The IGPL representatives also expressed their commitment to supporting the government’s initiatives at the grassroots level.

As part of its broader vision, IGPL aims to provide international-standard golf training and coaching to over 10 lakh school and college students across India over the next three years, in collaboration with the IGU, marking a significant step towards grassroots sports development.

Yuvraj Singh said, “We are incredibly grateful for the recognition and support from the Hon’ble Sports Minister. His encouragement is a tremendous motivation for us to continue our mission of making golf more accessible and popular across India. This is a huge step forward for the sport, and we are committed to working together to nurture the next generation of golfers.”

Mundy expressed, “We are thrilled with the Minister’s kind words and his strong support for our efforts. It’s a huge boost for everyone involved with IGPL and a testament to the growing interest in golf in our country. This association with the government will be key to helping us find and nurture future champions, bringing more glory to India.”
